8-hour day trip to Doubtful Sound via Lake Manapouri and Wilmot Pass, with a fiord cruise, nature commentary and possible wildlife sightings.

Tour Overview

Travel into the remote wilderness of Doubtful Sound on this 8 hour day trip through Fiordland National Park. The journey begins with a 45 minute cruise across Lake Manapouri, where island-dotted water, rainforest and surrounding mountains set the tone for the day.

From West Arm, continue by coach over Wilmot Pass, climbing 671 metres through dense rainforest. When conditions allow, there are views out to Pātea Doubtful Sound, with the landscape shifting noticeably between clear and misty weather.

On the water in Doubtful Sound, you’ll explore 40 kilometres of fiord, surrounded by steep peaks and waterfalls. Nature guides share information, answer questions and point out landmarks as you cruise through one of New Zealand’s deepest and most remote fiords. Wildlife is a key part of the experience, with bottlenose dolphins and New Zealand fur seals often seen, and Fiordland crested penguins possible in season.

One of the most distinctive moments is the “Sound of Silence”, when the vessel’s engines are turned off and the fiord falls quiet except for birdsong and the natural sounds around you.

After the cruise, return the same way via Wilmot Pass and West Arm, then relax on the final cruise back across Lake Manapouri to the Manapouri visitor centre. Picnic lunches can be pre-ordered directly with the supplier after booking.
