Day tour from Te Anau to Milford Sound with scenic stops, Homer Tunnel, wildlife viewing and a fiord cruise through waterfalls and cliffs.

Tour Overview

Travel from Te Anau into Fiordland on a Milford Sound day tour that focuses on the landscape itself, from glacially carved valleys to the steep rock walls and native beech forest that frame the route. Along the valley floor, golden tussock grass adds a clear contrast to the darker mountainsides.

Scenic stops along the way highlight the changing terrain. Small roadside tarns offer reflective views of the Earl Mountains, while another viewpoint looks out over the Hollyford Valley and the Darran and Alisa Mountains. At 945 metres above sea level, the Homer Tunnel cuts through sheer rock for 1.2 kilometres, an engineering achievement completed in 1953 to provide road access to Milford Sound.

You will also stop at a pull over area where there is a good chance of spotting whio, or blue duck, and kea. Another stop reveals a series of powerful waterfalls, where the force of the water gives a sense of the heavy annual rainfall this area receives.

At Milford Sound, board the Milford Haven and cruise through the centre of the fiord. From the deck, take in cascading waterfalls, towering cliffs, and the scale of this World Heritage landscape, with onboard amenities and commentary adding context to the journey. The tour finishes back in Te Anau.
