From Wanaka Bike the Lake Dunstan Trail with Shuttle Return

After approx 7-8km enjoy your first real short climb. If you enjoy this you will really enjoy the other 2 bigger climbs on the trail

Our favourite stop is at the Carrick Winery for a quick coffee and homemade scone - lots of other refreshments available

Enjoy riding the trail through to Clyde. The trail is compacted gravel all the way and is a grade 1-3 trail

When they were building the trail they had to build 'clip-ons' where they couldn't build a trail. These are suspended from the mountainside

Along the way enjoy a stop at the 'Secret Bench' to see some stunning views of the lake below

The Hugo Suspension Bridge was donated to the Trail - 84m long in total

Arrive in Clyde and the Guest Experience Manager will take a photo, look after your bikes whilst you pop for a celebratory drink before shuttling you back to the start point

Tour Overview

Ride the Lake Dunstan Trail on a fully hosted day from Wanaka, with luxury nzbiketrails shuttles to Cromwell and support from a Guest Experience Manager, including a direct phone number for the day. On the drive, the team shares a little local history before setting you up in Cromwell with a route overview, safety briefing, bike introduction, and seat adjustment.

From there, you ride self guided from Cromwell to Clyde on 42km of purpose built trail. The Lake Dunstan Trail is an Official NZ Great Ride, graded 1 to 3, with compact gravel throughout. There are two 150m climbs, and an e-bike option is available to make the ascents easier.

This trail, opened in May 2021, is known for its engineering. Along the way, you ride 450m of clip-ons attached to the mountainside and cross the 84m Hugo suspension bridge. Riding time is about 2.5 hours in total, which leaves time to pause at Carrick Winery for refreshments before continuing to Clyde.

After reaching Clyde, there is usually time for a quick celebratory drink before the 3pm shuttle back to Wanaka. It is a strong choice in any season, including winter, when it works well as an active day off skiing for families.

What To Expect

This is a stunning ride in any season including Winter where it is a great 'active' day off skiing for the family. Daily luxury nzbiketrails shuttles from Wanaka. We will even share a little history on the way. On arrival in Cromwell you will be provided with a Lake Dunstan Trail route overview, a safety briefing, an introduction to your bike and we will set up your seat height. Once ready you will cycle the Lake Dunstan Trail self-guided from Cromwell to Clyde - 42km of purpose built trail. The Dunstan Trail is a Grade 1-3 Trail. The surface is good throughout (compact gravel). There are two 150m climbs which the e-bike option will help you to get to the top, with very little effort involved! The trail is a stunning ride, opened in May 2021 - a feat of engineering. You will enjoy riding on the 450m of 'clip-ons' to the mountain side and over the 84m long Hugo suspension bridge. In total there is about 2.5 hours of actual riding so you have time to stop at the Carrick Winery for refreshments along the way. Once you get to Clyde you should have time for a quick celebratory drink before you are shuttled back to Wanaka at 3pm. The Dunstan Trail is a 'must do' one day adventure.

Meet the nzbiketrails Lake Dunstan Shuttle at the Lakeside Wanaka Bus Station. Please ensure that you are there ready to go 10 minutes before your departure time. The transport cannot wait for late arrivals and will depart as soon as all guests have arrived or at the departure time.
