Full-day guided walk from Te Anau to Key Summit via the Routeburn Track, with scenic Milford Road stops, a moderate alpine hike and Southern Alps views.

Tour Overview

This full day guided walk follows part of the Routeburn Track to Key Summit, combining a scenic drive from Te Anau with a moderate alpine hike in Fiordland. The journey to the trailhead takes around 1.5 to 2 hours along the Milford Road, with short scenic stops before reaching Fiordland’s mountain divide between east and west.

The walk begins at the Divide Shelter on a well maintained track and climbs steadily through lush forest. You gain about 400 metres in elevation over roughly two hours at a leisurely pace. Higher up, the landscape opens into an alpine herb field, with wide views across the surrounding Southern Alps.

On fine days, lunch is enjoyed on Key Summit. If the weather is less favourable, lunch is taken in a nearby shelter. After lunch, the route returns the same way, descending back to the Divide Shelter before the drive to Te Anau.

Allow around five hours of walking, depending on your pace, though you should be prepared for at least four hours on foot with some hill climbing. This walk is rated moderate, so a reasonable level of fitness is needed, especially as weather conditions can occasionally make the day more challenging.

What To Expect

Your trip departs from Te Anau and takes around 1.5 - 2 hours travelling in a vehicle, with short scenic stops, to arrive at Fiordland’s mountain "divide" - between east and west. Here the walk begins at the Divide Shelter with a steady climb on a well maintained track. Gaining an elevation of 400 meters, the ascent takes approximately 2 hours at a leisurely pace. On a fine day lunch is had on Key Summit, and in unfavorable conditions in a nearby shelter. After lunch you will descend back to the Divide Shelter before returning to Te Anau. You will spend approximately 5 hours walking based on your ability but you should be prepared for at least 4 hours walking at a leisurely pace with some hill climbing. This walk is rated 'moderate' as some fitness is required for the hill climb and potential for challenging weather conditions on occasion.
