Kepler Track Water Taxi

This full day walk on the Kepler Track begins with a water taxi across Lake Te Anau to Brod Bay, then returns the same way at the end of the day. From the lake edge, the track climbs steadily through tall beech forest, following a route designed to showcase the range of Fiordland landscapes in a single hike.

Higher up, the forest gives way to tussock country and wide alpine views. A key highlight is the climb to Mount Luxmore, 1472m, where the outlook takes in Lake Te Anau and the town below. Along the way, there is time to explore the Luxmore Caves, known for their stalactites and stalagmites.

The Kepler Track is often chosen as a day walk because it combines deep gorges, rugged high country and open ridgelines with a well formed hiking trail. The changing terrain is a big part of the experience, from shaded forest to exposed alpine sections with long views across Fiordland.

If you are out late in the day, this area is also home to native birdlife including the morepork and Brown Kiwi, which may be heard rather than seen. This is a rewarding option for walkers wanting a full day on one of New Zealand’s best known tracks.
