Self-guided 42 km ride from Cromwell to Clyde on the Lake Dunstan Trail, with compacted gravel, the Hugo Suspension Bridge and lake history.
Ride one of New Zealand’s Great Ride routes on a self guided journey from Cromwell to Clyde, following the Lake Dunstan Trail along the far side of the lake from the main road. This 42 km ride uses a well formed compacted gravel surface and ranges from Grade 1 to 3, making it suitable for fit, confident riders aged 10 and over.
The trail is known for the engineering that made it possible, including sections built on clip ons attached to the rockface and the Hugo Suspension Bridge. Along the way, information boards explain the area’s history, from the goldrush through to the construction of New Zealand’s largest dam, adding context to the changing landscape beside the lake.
Because this is a self guided ride, you can travel at your group’s own pace and stop where you choose. Named stops along the route include Carrick Winery and Burger & Coffee Afloat, with time to finish in historic Clyde before your shuttle returns you to Cromwell, where your car is parked.
E-bikes are recommended, especially as there is a 25 km section without road access. Adjustable assistance levels help groups stay together without turning the ride into a race, whether you are riding with family or friends.
