Full-day 4x4 trip from Queenstown via Arrowtown to Macetown, with 25 Arrow River crossings, gold panning, museum visit and a walk to Homeward Bound Battery.

Tour Overview

Travel from Queenstown to Arrowtown Village, then head off road along the old miners’ wagon trail into the backcountry behind the town. This full day 4x4 journey follows the Arrow River trail to Macetown, a former gold mining settlement from Otago’s 1860s gold rush, with 25 river crossings each way along a narrow, rugged road.

There is a brief visit to the museum in Arrowtown to introduce the area’s gold mining history before continuing deeper into the mountains. At Macetown, stop for a picnic lunch, explore relics from the abandoned township, and take in the surrounding backcountry views. In spring and summer, the valleys are lined with lupins, adding another layer to the landscape.

A 90 minute return walk leads through wild alpine terrain to the Homeward Bound Battery, a four storey structure that stands as a reminder of the engineering used during the gold mining era. You will also have the chance to try gold panning in the Arrow River with hands on instruction.

Throughout the day, guides share stories of pioneer hardship, gold rush characters, and the rise and fall of Macetown, now a Department of Conservation reserve. This is a remote, history focused off road trip with real river crossings, mountain terrain, and strong links to Queenstown’s gold mining past.
