Depart Queenstown on a scenic flight to Milford Sound, crossing the Southern Alps on a route that reveals the scale of this part of New Zealand from the air. From your window, the landscape opens out into lakes, forested river valleys, waterfalls, jagged ridge lines and snow covered peaks, giving a clear sense of how remote and varied the terrain is between Queenstown and Milford Sound.
After landing at Milford Sound, the next stage of the trip takes you to the cruise departure point. Depending on timing, this may be by shuttle bus, or by a short walk through bush and foreshore with your pilot. The cruise then travels the full length of the fiord at a relaxed pace, giving you time on the water to take in the scale of Milford Sound from sea level as well as from the air.
Following the 2 hour cruise, your pilot escorts you back to the aircraft for the return to Queenstown. The flight back follows a different path, adding a second perspective on the Southern Alps and the changing patterns of valleys, forest and alpine terrain below.
