Mou Waho Island Cruise and Guided Nature Walk

Cruise across Lake Wanaka to Mou Waho Island Nature Reserve on a fast lake cruiser, with commentary from your kiwi skipper on local history, geology and culture along the way. The 30 minute journey passes Ruby Island, where you can spot the 1920s dance hall on top, before continuing through the mountain scenery of the lake.

At Mou Waho Island, you will head ashore for a guided walk on this predator free Department of Conservation nature reserve. Over around two hours on the island, your guide explains the geology, history and biology of the reserve while leading the climb to the summit. The walk rises 150 metres vertically over 1 kilometre, so it is best suited to those comfortable with an uphill track.

At the top, visit the island’s natural glacial lake, a distinctive feature with a small island in it. This is also a chance to see the results of conservation work first hand. Mou Waho is home to the rare flightless Buff Weka, extinct on the mainland since 1920, as well as the Mountain Stone Weta and other native birdlife.

After time on the island, cruise back to Roys Bay Wanaka for lunch, rounding out a half day focused on wildlife, conservation and the natural features of Lake Wanaka.
