Cycle from Auripo to Chatto Creek on the Otago Central Rail Trail via Poolburn Gorge, with bike fitting in Clyde and options to continue to Alexandra.
Start your day at 9am in Historic Clyde, where you’ll be fitted with a Merida hire bike and given helpful information about points of interest along the route. From there, a transfer takes you to Auripo for the start of your ride on one of the most notable sections of the Otago Central Rail Trail.
From Auripo, the trail soon reaches Poolburn Gorge, a standout part of the ride as it cuts through the Raggedy Range between the Manuherikia and Ida Valleys. This section includes the 37 metre high Poolburn Viaduct, two tunnels, the trail’s longest bridge, and wide Central Otago landscapes. It is a ride with plenty of variety, but it remains accessible for travellers who are short on time and do not need a high level of fitness.
After 17 kilometres, Muddy Creek Cafe in Omakau is a natural place to pause for coffee and one of its cinnamon scrolls. From here, you can choose to take a side trip to historic Ophir, or continue over Tiger Hill to the Chatto Creek Tavern. You’ll be collected from Chatto Creek at 2.30pm, or you can keep riding on to Alexandra and Clyde, either via the Rail Trail or the River Trail.
