Guided small group tour from Queenstown to Tekapo via Kawarau Gorge, Lindis Pass and Lake Pukaki, with about 2.5 hours in Aoraki National Park.

Tour Overview

Travel from Queenstown to Tekapo on a fully guided small group tour that includes time in Aoraki National Park and a changing run of Central Otago and Mackenzie Country landscapes. This is a 9 hour one way journey, with roughly 2 and a half hours of free time in the national park for walks, hikes, or optional activities.

Leaving Queenstown, the route heads north through Kawarau Gorge, with views of the Kawarau Suspension Bridge and the Roaring Meg Lookout. From there, the tour continues into Cromwell, passing vineyards, crossing Lake Dunstan, and following the lake toward Lindis Pass. At the Lindis Pass lookout, 971 metres above sea level, there is a stop to take in the valley views from one of only three alpine roads through the Southern Alps.

The landscape opens out across the Mackenzie district, where Merino sheep are often seen before a break in Omarama. Turning west, Lake Pukaki comes into view, framed by Aoraki/Mt Cook and the Southern Alps. This stop offers time to take in the lake’s distinctive blue colour and the mountain backdrop, with guides also pointing out nearby Lord of the Rings filming locations mentioned along the route.

The day finishes with the drive to Lake Tekapo, where guides highlight notable sights on the way to the drop off points.
