Rob Roy Glacier Guided Walk

This full day guided hike reaches Rob Roy Glacier in a World Heritage Area, with your local guide with you from pick-up to drop-off. The day starts with a drive around Lake Wanaka, where you may spot That Wanaka Tree, Ruby Island, and other well-known points around the lake, before continuing beneath Roy's Peak and into the Matukituki Valley.

After several fords, you arrive at Raspberry Hut, an old shepherd’s hut, where the walk begins beside the Matukituki River. The track enters Mt Aspiring National Park by swing bridge, then climbs steadily through New Zealand Beech rainforest. Along the way, your guide shares knowledge of the area, including its history, flora and fauna, as the forest reveals moss, ferns, shrubs and trees.

Around 2.5 hours into the walk, the bush gives way to open alpine ground with herbs and flowers. From here, the panorama of the Rob Roy Glaciers opens up. There is time to stop, rest, and take in the glacier views while enjoying a gourmet packed lunch before heading back. This is a one day way to experience a high country valley, native forest, and glacier landscape without committing to a multi-day trek.
