Self-guided 42km ride from Cromwell to Clyde on the Lake Dunstan Trail, with return by Dunstan Explorer Boat and shuttle included.

Tour Overview

Ride one of New Zealand’s Great Ride routes on a self guided journey from Cromwell to Clyde, following the Lake Dunstan Trail on the opposite side of the lake from the main road. This 42km ride has a very good surface throughout, and riders travel at the pace of their own group. E-bikes are strongly recommended, especially for mixed ability groups, as the adjustable assistance helps everyone stay together.

Along the way, the trail shows the scale of the engineering behind it, including 450m of clip-ons attached to the rockface and the Hugo Suspension Bridge. Information boards add context to the landscape, covering the area’s goldrush history and the construction of New Zealand’s largest dam.

There are several places to pause during the ride, including Carrick Winery and Burger Afloat, before a celebratory drink in historic Clyde. After finishing, return to Cromwell on the Dunstan Explorer Boat, which gives a different perspective of the lake and parts of the trail not seen from the bike. Luxury shuttles are included.

This trip suits fit and confident riders aged 15 and over. Regular bike riders should be used to riding longer distances, while e-bikes make the route more manageable for a wider range of riders. As a Qualmark Gold accredited operator, the company delivers this experience in partnership with the Dunstan Explorer.
